Ellen Herman Cited in Supreme Court Same-Sex Marriage Ruling

University of Oregon history professor Ellen Herman has been part of a team of historians who filed legal briefs regarding same-sex marriage cases that made their way through the federal circuit courts over the past seven years. On June 26, 2015, the Supreme Court ruled that the Constitution guarantees a nationwide right to same-sex marriage. The brief submitted by the team of which Herman was a part was important in that it was cited early in the published opinion available here Obergefell v. Hodges. Such work builds on the collective efforts of many scholars over the past generation who, together, have made a difference.
